RM Watson was appointed by The Greater Union Organisation and Apex Diagnostics to complete a full refurbishment of the rooftop membrane of the iconic Gowings Building. Purpose built in 1929 for the Gowings Bros Department Store, the Market Street structure is one of Sydney’s most recognisable heritage sites.
Works delivered across the project included the demolition of an asbestos contaminated waterproof membrane and topping slab and the installation of a new, bespoke 3-layer torch on sheet membrane system.
RM Watson undertook significant enabling works across the project to facilitate the installation of the new membrane system. This included the removal and reinstallation of the site's mechanical plant and HVAC systems and the design and installation of a new light-weight metal roof structure.
The site is currently tenanted by the QT Hotel and a methodology was developed in close consultation with the hotel to minimise the impact of the works on the normal operations of the site.
